Model building Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Model building - Term Paper Example The purpose of this model is to assess the claim and handle the situation appropriately. It involves investigation procedures to unearth the truth so as to make decisive and conclusive actions. The media and citizensââ¬â¢ claims have to be investigated to assess where they registered complaint and whoever was responsible. This calls for an investigation team to assist in the process. The model tries to give answers why the complaints are not heard. The model Purpose The purpose of the model is to study why residentsââ¬â¢ complaints have not been heard. In order to get proper answers independent investigation must be done. Complaint handling procedures are specific to organizations, and each organization policies are unique. Public policy for complaint launching and handling is always very clear. The study would put into account how these complaints were registered. As a line area manager, assessment to ensure that the staff gives appropriate concerns in helping complaint handling, investigates and resolves complaints. Constraints Investigation consumes time and it is often costly. On this basis, the model structure must mirror cost effective one and involve a proper time frame within which the purpose of the study is achieved. Policy is clear on how the complaints should be registered for accountability. This leads to assessment on how the complaint was registered (Adorno, 2000).... Independently, this team ensures to retrieve the logs of complaints for the particular period claim is made. This would involve accessing systems without the aid of responsible staff to handle complaints. This is to make sure the investigation is reliable and accurate. The investigation process is to be done within two weeks. The findings are to be evaluated and recommendation given to various departments to facilitate proper actions. Complaint material published by an organization should include a statement of guarantee that a plaintiff will not be victimized or suffer from negative handling because they have made a complaint. In a public sector, the community should not be isolated because of the complaints they raised due to poor service delivered by public sector. Policy The complaint policy approach has to be reassessed to ensure that proper accountability is in place. The time frame stipulated to handle compliant and priority appended to complaints in regards to sensitivity. Co mplaint value assessment is essential, and during the investigation it must be considered so as to verify if complaints are treated according to policy stipulation. It is essential to understand the existing policies so as to gauge the complaint problem. The resident may be claiming that the complaints are not being handled yet policy implementation is in progress. Integration of complaint handling must be properly instituted into policy document. This is a sure way of enhancing accountability within organizations (Reif, & International Ombudsman Institute, 2004). Commitment and responsibility The model helps in analyzing the commitment of staff to

Interviewing for the Future Essay Example for Free
Interviewing for the Future Essay Interviewing is considered by many people to be an art. As an adolescent, I never had the chance to interview someone before and it really made me have to expose myself to the world outside of my comfort zone. Being only eighteen years old, I wanted to explore my future career path a little more in depth from somebody who knows the field. I chose to do my interview on someone I admired off campus who works in my field of interest. As a freshman in college, most students donââ¬â¢t know which direction they want to go in, most of them are undeclared. Upon entering CCSU this fall I, too, was undeclared; however, very recently I discovered that I wanted to work in the field of dentistry. I noted that I wanted to talk to an expert, somebody who had been in the field for many years so I could get a concrete grasp on what a day-in-the-life was like. I decided that I wanted to know more on the field and conducted an interview with Lyudmila Adamitskaya, a dental hygienist at Smiles for the Future a pediatric dentist office in Glastonbury, CT. Before I decided to conduct the actual interview, I did some basic background research on Smiles for the Future. I looked at their company website to get a sense of what the atmosphere was like. After I got the general idea of what the pediatric dentistry field was similar too, I brainstormed a variety of questions. I wanted to know what it was like for Lyudmila and what the work environment was like. I had already known quite a bit about the actual field itself, but I wanted to find out things about the pediatric dentistry field that a person couldnââ¬â¢t read about in Chemistry books or through Anatomy lectures. I wanted to discover why she liked her job and what she didnââ¬â¢t like about her job. I desired to know the obstacles she had to overcome and if her expectations were fulfilled from what she had perceived them to be while in college. At first I couldnââ¬â¢t find the right words to put down on paper prior to the interview. From the in class essay we read ââ¬Å"The Art of Interviewingâ⬠I took away a central point that really stood out to me, ââ¬Å"Substance is powerful to conduct a meaningful interviewâ⬠(Foster 1). This quote really jumped off the page for me because it made me think that if I didnââ¬â¢t have the questions I wanted answered, then what was the point of even doing the interview? This point certainly got me to brainstorm for quite a long time to get the right questions. I took away another point from the essay, ââ¬Å"If the interviewer already suspects what content is coming then why conduct the interview?â⬠(Foster 1). This acknowledgement made me really concentrate on questions I could not possibly know the answers to, so that my interview would be meaningful to me and not just a waste of time. I knew that going into the interview, I was going to be nervous but I had no idea what was going to happen. On the afternoon of September 24th, 2012 I walked into the colorful pediatric office of Smiles for the Future in Glastonbury, CT. I anxiously waited until Mrs. Lyudmila Adamitskaya was finished with a small girl who looked as if she were around six or seven years old. I looked around at my surroundings and noticed many toys thrown about the waiting room. Normally, this wouldnââ¬â¢t bother me, I love working with children; however, today seemed different. I couldnââ¬â¢t place what it was that bothered me so much about this but I was abruptly pulled out of my dream-like state when Mrs. Adamitskaya greeted me with a warm and cheery ââ¬Å"Hello!â⬠The first thing I noticed about her was her bright purple scrubs. Her hair was neatly tied back and she had a professional, but friendly, demeanor about her. We shook hands briefly and she invited me to come to the back, into room six. She invited me to sit in the patientââ¬â¢s chair, which was significantly smaller than I was and we shared a brief ice-breaking laugh at the situation. She asked me how old I was and I told her I was eighteen and conducting the interview for my English class. I also told her how I was considering going into the field of pediatric dentistry. Immediately, I saw her face light up and I smiled at how much I could tell just from that simple body language she really enjoyed her job. I opened up the interview with the most basic question I could think of; what made you want to become a dental hygienist? She paused momentarily, trying to search for the right words, a puzzled yet relaxed expression on her face. Finally she stated with an enormous smile, ââ¬Å"I always wanted to work in the medical field or dental field to make a difference in peopleââ¬â¢s oral and overall healthâ⬠(Adamitskaya). Just that statement alone told me most of what I needed to know about Mrs. Adamitskayaââ¬â¢s attitude not only towards her patients, but towards all people. The statement told me that she genuinely cared how people were doing and she wanted to make a difference in the community. I nervously looked around the room at small stuffed animals and butterfly wallpaper and asked, ââ¬Å"Do you like your work environment?â⬠Mrs. Adamitskaya looked relieved and a little less under pressure. She quickly stepped back into the upbeat woman I first had seen and said, ââ¬Å"I love my work environment because I get to work with amazing doctors and team members who dedicate their work and knowledge to improve and educate people about oral healthâ⬠(Adamitskaya). This really perked my interest that she felt so strongly about the field and how much her doctors and co-workers cared for other patients as much as she did. I wanted to know more so I added ââ¬Å"Do you like your job? Whatââ¬â¢s the best and worst part about your job?â⬠She glanced around, looked at me and smiled. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t like my job.â⬠She paused, gave me a strange look and continued, ââ¬Å"I love my job! I love it because everything we do is for our patients and it brings positive feedback. It encourages patients to keep coming back. Itââ¬â¢s always rewarding to work with patients and make a difference in peopleââ¬â¢s lives and build relationships. The worst part would be the cost of health insurance for familiesâ⬠(Adamitskaya). I could sense she felt bad about the state of the economy, and briefly went on to discuss with me how ââ¬Å"unfortunate it is that most families struggle to put food on the table at night while balancing family and school lifeâ⬠(Adamitskaya). When I saw how much this bothered her it made me eager to get more information on her personal background and struggles. I was nervous to ask at first, but my inner childââ¬â¢s curiosity got the best of me and I rather excitedly asked ââ¬Å"What obstacles have you had to overcome to get where you are today?â⬠She laughed a little; Iââ¬â¢m assuming at how embarrassed I looked, I mustââ¬â¢ve been a little flushed because my face felt hot as I waited for an answer. She proudly said, ââ¬Å"Going through my college years, I didnââ¬â¢t speak English until I came to America when I was 22 years old. I was raising two children, working full time for minimum wage at Subway to put myself through school. I was trying to learn English and all the dynamics that go into a dental hygiene program at the same time. There were nights I didnââ¬â¢t sleep, but I did it all to provide a better future for my familyâ⬠(Adamitskaya). It was at this point in the interview I really felt a huge personal connection with Mrs. Lyudmila Adamitskaya. I told her that I, myself, had been working two jobs and putting myself through college full time and she simply replied with a soft smile, ââ¬Å"All hard work has rewardsâ⬠(Adamitskaya). After this significant quote, Mrs. Adamitskaya wasnââ¬â¢t just another dental hygienist I was interviewing; she became somebody I truly admired. But I had to know if all that she worked for paid off for her and if in her heart her expectations were fulfilled. I asked, ââ¬Å"Were your expectations fulfilled when you entered your career field from what you thought it would be like in college?â⬠She eagerly answered very quickly, ââ¬Å"Yes! They were fulfilled for certain. I am very pleased with what I have achieved over the last ten years of working as a dental hygienistâ⬠(Adamitskaya). When she said that her expectations were fulfilled, it somehow made me feel much more relaxed about the career path I had finally decided I wanted to go with. I then asked her what her opinion was on the industry in terms of job openings for after I completed college. She hesitated; looking almost worried, and said, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s easier to find a part time job rather than a full time position because of the economy, but it is an ever growing field and will always expandâ⬠(Adamitskaya). Her words had a way of relaxing me almost instantly. Mrs. Lyudmila Adamitskaya was definitely a woman who I would love to go back to for a second, third or even fourth interview with. She was extremely honest, kind and opened up her office doors to me in a very warm and friendly environment. I thanked her for meeting with me, shook her hand again and told her that I would love to meet with her again in the future to talk about dental hygiene and the wonderful world of pediatric dentistry. She laughed at my humor and said to ââ¬Å"stay in school.â⬠I walked back to my car with a newfound confidence in my ability to interview somebody. What I took away from this experience was not only how to interview a person I wanted to know more about, but how to go with the natural flow of conversation to fulfill my own curiosity. I had tons of questions lined up on paper, but I realized when I got back to my car that I hadnââ¬â¢t asked any of the basic questions I had written on the paper. I found that it was much more natural to talk from what I honestly wanted to know than from what I brainstormed in the midst of cramming all of my homework into one night. I learned that interviewing really isnââ¬â¢t as difficult as it had seemed before. It takes determination as well as a sense of confidence and curiosity in the subject to conduct a successful interview. Interviewing, from this experience, showed me that itââ¬â¢s not just about the answers, but how carefully the questions are tailored to how the person responds to a statement that is made. I learned that interviewing is truly an art form in itself. Work Cited Adamitskaya, Lyudmila. Personal Interview. 24 Sept, 2012. Foster, Linda. ââ¬Å"The Art of Interviewing.â⬠25 Sept, 2012.

Kant Vs Mill on the Issue of Lying Essay -- Philosophy, Ethics
Firstly, by looking at the first patient, whether she gets a kidney from her father or a ââ¬Å"cadaver kidneyâ⬠, there will be no difference because she needs a kidney nonetheless. The second patient however, cannot agree to give his kidney away because one of the main reasons is that heââ¬â¢s scared and lacks ââ¬Å"the courage to make this donationâ⬠9. So right at this point, it can be seen that it would be better if the father didnââ¬â¢t give his kidney away because it wouldnââ¬â¢t cause him any happiness, whereas the daughter has two options to gIn everyday life, whether on a personal base or on a professional base, difficult scenarios, or also known as moral dilemmas, are present. Depending on whom the person is or what their belief and value systems are, the issue can be ââ¬Ëresolvedââ¬â¢. In this particular case, questions arise about whether it is morally right to lie to family members when something can be done, ignoring the fact of its after effec ts. The case will be explained in details later on including the patientââ¬â¢s state, but to answer this ethical question, two theorists will be presented for the con and pro side. For the con side, the deontologist Immanuel Kant will be presented with his theory that lying is prohibited under all circumstances, as for the pro side, John Stuart Mill will be presented for the utilitarian theory stating that whichever decision brings out the most happiness is the right decision. After discussing the case, my personal view of what is right will be stated with my own reasons, which is that lying is the right decision to be taken. This case study which is taken from Robert M. In Defense of Patenting You and Your Family :: essays research papers fc
In Defense of Patenting You and Your Family How would you feel if I told you that I am the new proud owner of you and your family? That is, that I have been granted a United States patent on the DNA sequence particular to your line of descent because I have identified a unique property of your genetic material. A few cultured cells with your genetic makeup, added to lotion and rubbed on the skin, allow one to look younger, wrinkle-free, and be less susceptible to skin cancer. Of course this does not mean that I have control over yours and your familyââ¬â¢s actions ââ¬â only over the application of your DNA to skin care. If you feel like you may have hit the jackpot, then prepare for another disappointment ââ¬â you are not entitled to any portion of my profits, nor are you rewarded for having such supple genes. Under current patent law, living entities are not patentable in their natural state, which means that you cannot patent your own body1. Other requirements for a patent is that the invention or design is novel ââ¬â no one else made it public; innovative ââ¬â it canââ¬â¢t be a development which is obvious; and useful ââ¬â it has to aid a practical human activity. British woman, Donna MacLean found out that she canââ¬â¢t patent her own body when she became the first person to try to patent herself in early 2000. Her patent application was titled ââ¬Å"Myselfâ⬠and her reason for trying to do it was as good as any. ââ¬Å"It has taken 30 years of hard labour for me to discover and invent myself, and now I wish to protect my invention from unauthorized exploitation, genetic or otherwise,â⬠MacLean told the British newspaper ââ¬Å"The Guardian.â⬠So Donna and your family will not become wealthy from your respectable DNA, but letââ¬â¢s not discredit our legal system yet. Perhaps the system is accurate after all, and the issues are more complex than they appear at first glance. à à à à à No matter where your family is from, the US, Britain, or Kenya, the controversial race of biotech companies to own human DNA is having its affect. For example, imagine another family from a third-world country, letââ¬â¢s say somewhere in Africa, and that bioprospectors from the US have isolated an HIV immunity gene from the fatherââ¬â¢s saliva. The bioprospectors then develop a revolutionary treatment for AIDS, which costthem millions of dollars to research.

Business Should Always Be Ethically and Socially Responsible
Corporate scandals in business world have been more and more common, which damages the interest and profits of stakeholders, employers, community or society. The corporate scandals pull the public to focus on the ethic of managers and the firm itself. Comparing to the past, customers are focusing more and more on the reputation of the firms and they prefer to select the brands that are environmentally friendly and socially responsible when they buy products or service. This change pushes firms to maintain their reputations with more efforts. Corporate social responsibility has been a hot topic in business world today, which is an important part of building brand image while brand image is a value for firms. This essay holds the statement that business should always be ethically and socially responsible. Firstly, it gives the several definitions of business ethic and corporate social responsibility briefly. Subsequently, it outlines the pros and coins for addressing corporate social re sponsibility.Following this, it discusses the negative effects caused by corporate scandals with several real cases likeToyota, Bernard Madoff and Enron. Finally it discusses the benefits when business is ethically and socially responsible with the examples of Procter & Gamble and Li Ka-shing. Definitions of business ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility Ethics is the code of values and principles to govern peopleââ¬â¢s behaviours to verdict what is right or wrong. Business ethic is the application of personal moral in commercial enterprise.Comparing to the vague definition of business ethics, the definition of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is clearer. As stated by The World Business Council for Sustainable Development(2014), corporate social responsibility is the commitment of business to contribute to the economic development and the welfare of employees and the family, the community and the whole society. European Commission (2014) defines this concept as follow: the firms integrate concerns of social and environment with stakeholders in the economic decisions and actions voluntarily. The definitions of business ethics and corporate social responsibility state that business firms are acting ethically and socially responsible means in the economic operations they should consider the interests of stakeholders, environment and society and they should concern the welfare of employees and the family instead of concerning only the profits of firms and personal interest. The proponents of CSR include the moral obligation, license to operate, sustainability and reputation (Porter, 2004).According to Lahovnik (2008), there are three levels of corporate social responsibility. The first level is the obligation to meet the material for shareholders, employees, customers, creditorsand suppliers. The second level is the responsibility to benefit the human resource of community and avoid the damage to environment. The last one is the responsibility to the s ociety. Even though there is not clear definition how far firms should address the social responsibility, there is indeed a fact that firms should take the social responsibility in their economic operations.Against and For Corporate Social Responsibility There is a hot debating on whether firms should address their corporate social responsibility or not. For the objectors, business is just business that maximize profits is the economic responsibility of management instead of being the social role in society. The social problems should not be resolved by firms and firms are not designed to handle these issues. Corporate social responsibility could be an important tool wielded by firms.Stated by The Wall Street Journal, the addressing of CSR may be anillusion and a dangerous one because when there is a conflict between private profit and social interest; firms tend to select the former one (Karnani,2010). Even though the firms say they are doing the projects with charity purposes, the investment or cost of these projects may be owned by other ways, which may harm the interest of environment or society. Different from the objectors, there are a variety of reasons to support the idea that firms should address the corporate social responsibility and be ethical. The first reason is that the human and social problems are largely led by industrialization and business firms own the social resource that business has the obligation to reduce and solve these issues. Firms have been important parts of the society and they own a huge resource, which means they also carry the obligation to solve the problems in the society especially these problems led by their economic operations. The second reason is that business firms can get benefits from addressing corporate social responsibility.CSR directly benefits the financial bottom line and improve the competitiveness of firms. CSR can enhance reputation and brand image of firms. The survey of PWC 2002 showed that 90% of responde nts said that corporate social responsibility can enhance the corporate reputation. The 2002 Cone Corporate Citizenship Study also showed that 84 percent of American would change brands to those with good reputation in the similar price and quality (Kotler and Lee 2005).When companies address corporate social responsibility, it will bring positive impacts on retention, recruitment and motivations of employees for the firms. For example, Timberland is always encouraging its employees to offer community service called Path of Service, which has been ranked by Fortune and Timberland is named as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For (Provictus, 2012). The third reason is the social benefits brought by business firms when they address corporate social responsibility and act ethically. When business firms act ethically, the firms can reduce the negative impacts on stakeholders, employees, customers and the society, which will be discussed below with real cases. When business firms perf ormance well in CSR, they can bring huge benefits to the investors, stakeholders, customers, community and society, which will be discussed below with examples as well. Negative Effects of Corporate Scandals When business firms or managers of firms act unethically and ignore their corporate social responsibility, the negative effects can outburst internally and externally. The negative effects of corporate scandals can influence the reputation of firms, the interests of stakeholders, employees, customers, environment and society. In 2009, Toyota recalled over 9 million cars over the world in two separate recalls because of the quality issue, which led to billions of dollars in operating losses andcharges. The reputation of top quality in car industry faced a heavy hit globally. Even though Toyota would not collapse completely, the reputation was threatened, which has been built through decades (Connor, 2010).The share price dropped down and customers distrusted Toyota in quality. The unethical action of Toyota to produce unsafe cars pulled Toyota in a dangerous place that it brought side effects on the reputation globally, which definitely reduced its market share and sales globally. In June 2009, the unethical behavior of Bernard Madoff damaged the interest of investors by using the Ponzi scheme. The similar case with Bernard Madoff exist more in business world, which brings huge side effects to investors. As a top audit firm, Enron met the corporate scandal.Enron lied about the profits and the success of Enron was brought by creative accounting. In 2013, the building collapse of Rana Plaza killed more than 1,100 people and this event involved many famous clothes brands into corporate scandals. Wal-Mart is one of them because it received clothes from Banned Bangladesh Factories, which has been defined as unethical operation (Grabell, 2013). The unethical behaviours of Wal-Mart damaged the interest of workers in Banned Bangladesh Factories. Meanwhile, Wal-Martà ¢â¬â¢s brand image has been affected because Wal-Mart is treated as a firm with social responsibility. In 2010, BAE Systems plc (BAES) pleaded guilty for overseas corruption (The United States Department of Justice, 2010). The real cases that business firms or managers act unethically without corporate social responsibility are more than these mentioned above over the world. The side effects of these corporate scandals are widely spread. The corporate scandals can hurt the reputation of firms, the interests of investors and stakeholders, welfare of employees, the life damage or property losses of customers and the damage of environment. The side effects are so great that the society urges that the business should always be ethically and socially responsible. Positive Effects of Acting Ethically and Socially Responsible The positive effects of acting ethically and socially responsible support the statement that business should always be ethically and socially responsible. Just like t his essay stated above, there are various benefits firms and the whole society can get when firms address the corporate social responsibility and act ethically.Procter & Gamble is an excellent case of multinational firms that address corporate social responsibility well. There are few corporate scandals of Procter & Gamble in business world. Instead, there are many pieces of news on how Procter & Gamble is an excellent citizen in business world that addresses corporate social responsibility well. For example, Procter & Gamble provides PUR technology to purify dirty water for people in Africa and helps kids to live and get education (Procter &Gamble, 2013).Childrenââ¬â¢s Safe Drinking Water Program (CSDW) has reached over 70 countries to save tens of thousands of lives (Procter & Gamble, 2014a). Apart from this;Procter & Gamble (2013) donated money and encouraged employees to help the poor kids to get education in China. To protect environment, Procter & Gamble(2014b) is committed to design recycled products with innovation. Procter & Gamble (2014c) is also trying to make zero waste a reality from manufacturing and designing. There is no report on how Procter & Gamble benefit from addressing its corporate social responsibility. However, Procter & Gamble build its great reputation in business world globally. The reputation enhances the brand image of Procter & Gamble and meanwhile it increases the sales of Procter & Gamble the cohesion of employees in the firm. The investors may tend to join in Procter & Gamble because Procter & Gamblehas great corporate citizenship. In addition to Procter & Gamble, Coca Cola, Pepsi and other multinational firms are doing greatly in addressing the corporate social responsibility and get benefits from it even though it takes some cost. The money used in corporate social responsibility is another form of investment, which will come out profits with intangible asset. In China, there is a famous rich person called Li Ka-shing, who is always acting ethically and socially responsible. Because of his ethical business behavior and good morality, Li Ka-shing built his reputation and the reputation of his firm in business world, which has contributed a lot to his success. Meanwhile, the ethical behavior of Li Ka-shing avoided the side effects on the stakeholders, employees, customers and society. From the real case of Procter & Gamble and Li Ka-shing, it shows that when business firms or businessmen act ethically and socially responsible, they get payback with good reputation and brand image, which will be switched to products sales and intangible asset. This supports the idea that why business should always be ethically and socially responsible. Conclusion In conclusion, business should always be ethically and socially responsible because the negative efforts of corporate scandals can hurt the interest of society while the impact of acting ethically and socially responsible can be positive to the society. The essay provides the definition of business ethics and corporate social responsibility to outline how firms and managers are acting ethically and socially responsible. Subsequently, it offers two sides for the argument whether firms should address corporate social responsibility to support the thesis of this essay. The real cases of corporate scandals show the results and side effects when firms behave unethically in economic operations to urge the need to be ethically and socially responsible.Meanwhile, the real cases of Procter & Gamble and Li Ka-shing show that when firms or businessmen behave ethically and socially responsible, they can get payback in economy as well and the address corporate society will benefit the investors, employees, community, customers and environment. The negative impacts of acting unethically and the positive impacts of firmsââ¬â¢ acting ethically and socially responsible to the firms, community and environment finally support the idea that business should a lways be ethically and socially responsible.

The eNotes Blog Grammar How-To That, Which, andWho
Grammar How-To That, Which, andWho This is Part Four in our Grammar How-To Series. Iââ¬â¢ll be brief. It matters, though maybe not the way you think it does. Or maybe exactly the way you think it does. Take the test and find out. 1. Choose the sentence that makes the most sense. a) Edgar Allan Poeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Cask of Amontilladoâ⬠that is about a crazy guy who bricks up his enemy behind a wall is an excellent read. b) Edgar Allan Poeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Black Cat,â⬠that is about a crazy guy who bricks up his wife behind a wall, is an excellent read. c) Edgar Allan Poeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Tell-Tale Heart,â⬠which is about a crazy guy who buries an old man beneath his floorboards, seems familiar somehow. 2. Choose the sentence that makes the most sense. a) I owe a debt of gratitude to John Steinbeck, whose novel Theà Grapes of Wrath motivated me to clean my room, do my dishes, and accomplish anything that was not reading his novel. b) I also am indebted to Ernest Hemingway who wrote The Old Man and the Sea and gave me a deeper appreciation for allegory and a powerful dislike of fishing. c) Finally, I would like to thank Herman Melvilleââ¬â¢s Moby-Dick that cured my insomnia and redoubled my determination to avoid ocean fishing. Answers: 1. c à 2. a Letââ¬â¢s start with what the sticklers say. For those grammarians with a dash up their semicolon, that should only be used for restrictive clauses, and which for nonrestrictive clauses. The part of me that gets her hyphens in a wad over these issues kind of likes that. The truth, though, is that more and more people are using which restrictively, and itââ¬â¢s particularly common in British English. So if you talk about lifts and torches, or if youââ¬â¢re a free spirit when it comes to your grammar, I canââ¬â¢t prevent you from continuing on your wayward path. So whatââ¬â¢s a restrictive clause? You use them when you need to restrict the number of things you could be talking about. The following sentences contain italicized restrictive clauses: I need a theme that will engage readers in this fascinating grammar post. Unfortunately, the only theme that I can come up with relates to the movie that I watched last night. That means the theme that will elucidate the mysteries of relative clauses for you is Jurassic Park. In each of those cases, the italicized segment is restrictive because it helps identify exactly which theme Iââ¬â¢m talking about. For example, in the first one, I donââ¬â¢t want just any theme- I need one that will fascinate (ignore the jibe that just came to the tip of your tongue). Also, the only themes on the planet are not ââ¬Å"movies I watched last nightâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Jurassic Parkâ⬠(though it did seem that way to me at the time), so it makes sense for me to make those clauses restrictive. What, then, is a nonrestrictive clause? Think of it like a parenthetical asides of nonrestrictive clauses are italicized below: Under her seat Lex found a flashlight, which seemed a useful tool at the time. And yet is a flashlight, which nobody told her to turn on, really a useful tool when you are hiding from a large carnivorous dinosaur? The flashlight, which attracts the attention of the light- and motion-sensitive T-rex, is not a useful tool for Lex at this time. In the first and second examples, even if I got rid of which seemed a useful tool at the time and which nobody told her to turn on, youââ¬â¢d still know which flashlight Iââ¬â¢m talking about. It would be pointless to restrict my meaning to only flashlights that seemed useful at the time, because there was only one flashlight in the car. In the third example, as Lex should have known, there was no flashlight in the world that would not attract the attention of the dinosaur overhead; thus Iââ¬â¢m at liberty to use a nonrestrictive clause. What about who? Who (or whose, whom, etc.) can be used with either restrictive or nonrestrictive clauses. Sadly, however, you still have to know the difference between the two, because you need to know where to put your commas. Commas should always be used to set off your nonrestrictive clauses. No commas means your nonrestrictive clause is suddenly restrictive, no matter what word youââ¬â¢ve used to begin it. For example, it would not make sense to write Lex who was lucky not to die during the flashlight debacle responds poorly to life-threatening situations. There are not two Lexes in Jurassic Park (which is a good thing, because otherwise nobody would have survived the movie), so thereââ¬â¢s no need for you to make the clause restrictive by omitting the comma. It would be better to write Lex, who was lucky not to die during the flashlight debacle, responds poorly to life-threatening situations. Itââ¬â¢s a good idea, however, to use a restrictive clause in the sentence The grandchild who got stuck in the tree was only marginally more intelligent. Since there are two grandchildren in the movie, the phrase who got stuck in the tree restricts my meaning and lets you know which of the foolish kids Iââ¬â¢m talking about.

Essay on Prisons and the War on DrugsEssay Writing Service
Essay on Prisons and the War on DrugsEssay Writing Service Essay on Prisons and the War on Drugs Essay on Prisons and the War on DrugsThe video War on Drugs Dramatically Increases Prison Population discusses the social and financial costs of the War on Drugs, including the costs of criminal justice, increased budget, reduced resources for providing the proper social services, etc. (University of Notre Dame, 1999; Korgen Furst, 2012). As the issue of drug abuse has been identified as an important social problem, it is necessary to explore the consequences of our reliance on punishment as a solution to drug abuse. There are certain differences between a cultureââ¬â¢s folkways, mores, and taboos. A folkway can be defined as a norm for human behavior that should be followed for the sake of convenience or the established tradition. A more can be defined as a strict norm that is based on morality, which helps to differentiate what is right and what is wrong. A taboo is the strictest norm in society that can bring the most severe sanctions. Some of these notions are considered to b e infractions of normative expectations termed criminal and others social. This definitional process leads us to incarcerate fellow citizens based on the established laws and regulations regarding drug abuse. There are several sociological factors that contribute to the criminalization of individuals in society, including racial prejudice, illegal immigration, unemployment, poor education of immigrants, mental health problems, etc. Criminalization is based on the application of certain laws to certain behaviors of individuals. Today all types of deviant behaviors are known as criminal. The deviance caused by drug abuse requires social control. Drug users are considered to be mentally ill people, or the people with serious forms of neurotic personality.à Although the action of a drug user is criminal, he/she need therapeutic assistance. The seriousness of drug abuse justifies our reliance on the social consequences of incarceration. Due to the stricter policies aimed at reducing d rug abuse rate; there are many prisoners who were involved in trafficking illegal drugs and who were incarcerated based on the established laws and regulations. Prisons should not only punish prisoners, but also rehabilitate them. Undoubtedly, incarceration would have a strong impact on our society and future generation. The current state of prisons in the U.S. should be reconsidered.

Marketing - Essay Example The growing interest in health and fitness may be viewed as an offshoot of the increasing modernization and affluence in lifestyle, particularly in the urban areas. Evidence of the importance accorded personal fitness and well-being is the growth of this industry for the tenth consecutive year; according to the 2010 FIA State of the UK Fitness Industry Report, 122 new facilities opened across the country during the 12 month period ending in 31 March 2010. Although national GDP contracted by a record 4.9% for the same year, the fitness industry remained strong at â⠤3.8 billion, with 7.4 million members and growing (The Leisure Database Company, 2007). Because of the strong competition and the potential buyers into this particular service, there is a need for well-managed marketing management to bring the company to customersââ¬â¢ attention. Marketing is ââ¬Å"the commercial process involved in promoting, selling, and distributing a product or serviceâ⬠(Princeton University, 2011). The aim of marketing is to provide information and encouragement for those who would benefit particularly from the services provided by Bodyproud Fitness, that is, those who would find the companyââ¬â¢s geographical location, price range, and product offerings appropriate for their particular needs. In the case of Bodyproud, marketing research would include a more precise estimation of the companyââ¬â¢s potential demand for the various products it offers ââ¬â gym, aerobics and yoga, and nutritional advice. This estimation includes a more thorough description of its target consumer profile, in terms of demographics, statistics, and future trends. It requires a determination of the affordable price range, the preferred product features, and the possible future likes and dislikes of the said market. (For price, Bodyproud may have to adjust its $100 initial and $500 monthly fee, depending on its research update.)

Autobiographical reseach paper - Essay Example It is one of the three counties that form the region of South Florida Metropolitan Area. One can see people of different race, color and culture merge in the pool of one single community, forming the community of Miami-Dade County. The variety of languages which are spoken throughout the county is reflection of this existing variety. The three official languages which are spoken are English, Spanish and Haitian Creole. Though besides these there are many other languages which can be heard while on the streets of the County, some of these are English, Spanish and Haitian Creole. Some of the other languages spoken are Brazilian, Portuguese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian and Russian. Most of the people speak other languages at home, and English outside. So the County has largest percentage of population who are bilingual or tri-lingual. . I feel very special being part of the community where there is so much diversity and acceptance, and almost no feeling of racial discrimination in h uman interaction within the society. (Miami, 2007) The community in which I live have a very historic date with the evidence of Native American settlement in the region as far back as 12, 000 years ago. The influence of the Tequesta people, who control much portion of the Southeastern Florida, is very evident. The cultural influence of hunting, fishing and gathering fruits and roots of the plants for food , is still very much part of practice, rather than being involved in agriculture. The Tequesta people have deep impact on the lifestyle of people residing, and have been credited with making the Miami Circle. Today this County can be said to have people representing from different countries and cultures like Argentineans, Bahamians, Brazilians, Canadians, Colombians, Cubans, Dominicans, French, Haitians, Hondurans, Jamaicans, Israelis, Italians, Mexicans, Nicaraguans, Russians,
Human Resource Management in Downsizing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Human Resource Management in Downsizing - Essay Example Despite so many rounds of restructuring, announcing another one has blown off the whole motivation towards work into air. Commitment to organizational objectives is crucial to maintain in such conditions. Commitment refers to attachment and loyalty. It represents the identification of an individual with and involvement in the organization. It consists of the following factors; The behavior towards the organization also needs to be managed. The visibility of acts, the extent to which the outcomes are irrevocable and the degree to which the person undertakes the action voluntarily are important features of behavior. Organizations, such as our bank, are facing increased competition and structural change. They are more conscious to get people to identify themselves more closely with the company. To meet these needs, three ways of representing commitments have been identified that are; affective, continuance and normative. Affective commitment deals with the emotional attachments. Continuance commitment is when employee(s) stays with an organization based on his/her perceived cost of staying i.e. the cost of going in search for a new job might be more. Normative commitment refers to the moral commitment of an employee to the organization. Thought all three might look similar, they have very different impacts on the manner the employee refers himself with respect to the organization. We need to inculcate the affective commitment in the employees of our bank to restore productivity and motivation to work effectively for the success of the company. If we are successful in this, we will have a better workforce with less absenteeism; a workforce that is willing to go beyond what is desired out of their job. They are more eager to assist the organization to achieve its goals and objectives. These types of employees tend to show more motivation and organizational citizenship. With the passage of time, the employees have become a part of the bank. They have developed psychological contracts with the bank. This is like forming a relational link; not based on the monetary and/or economic incentives but on their perceived loyalty and socialization within the bank that they have been continuously feeling and practicing over so many years. Whenever going for downsizing i.e. restructuring the organization, effective communication is always beneficial. Applying a vision oriented approach, while downsizing, complimented with good and effective communication will lower the feeling of being deceived by the management. The strategic management of human resource behaviors will avoid the "Survivors" to have a decreasing level of productivity due to their perceived gap between them and the top management group. Organizational overall future success is highly dependant on these survivors and there attitudes towards the company. These employees think that now they cannot count on a longer/continuous commitment from the bank management. These remaining people are a critical

The World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF). Why Has Essay
The World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF). Why Has Structural Adjustment implemented Proved so Controversial - Essay Example This has generated intense controversies on the effectiveness of the structural adjustment policies. This paper explores the controversies surrounding the effectiveness of the structural adjustments in the developing economies. Structural adjustments are measures formulated to facilitate and accelerate economic development in the targeted economies3. According Ahmed and Lipton structural adjustment polices are intended to rectify the structural imbalance in the foreign and public balances2. The policies could be initiated internally by the country concerned or external forces such the World Bank and the international monetary fund. The structural adjustments reforms endeavour to reduce and eliminate the various financial distortions, such as over valued exchange rate, huge monetary deficits and to restrict inefficient public services that hinder fair distribution of the resources in the economy of particular country1. 1I. Ahmed, and M. Lipton, ââ¬Å"Impact of Structural Adjustment o n Sustainable Rural Livelihood: A Review of the Literature.â⬠(1997), http://www.ids.ac.uk/files/Wp62.pdf Accessed 14 January 2012. 2 ibid., p25 3 F. Stewart, and A. Berry. ââ¬Å"Globalisation, Liberalization and Inequality: Real Causes.â⬠Challenge, February 2001, 45-86. In general, the structural adjustments are intended to minimise or eliminate the balance of payments and the public sector deficits, with an objective of stimulating high economic growth. In addition, the policies aim at achieving an appropriate structural change capable of sustaining a robust economic growth and a favourable monetary environment in a particular economy3. One of the major characteristic of the structural adjustments is promoting specialization where the targeted economy is influenced to produce commodities ââ¬Å"tradableâ⬠in the global market and reducing factors that enhance production of commodities with no or little economic value especially in the public domain4. Enhancing the flexibility and adaptability of the targeted economy to the changing global economic environment is an important objective of the structural adjustments. This reduces the effects of adverse global economic changes on the economy of a particular country 3. Structural adjustment policies comprise of measures aimed at facilitating short-term economic stability and long-term adjustments3. Short-term stabilisation measures are usually intended to the improvement of macro economic balance and overall stability. In order to attain the envisaged stability, structural adjustments enforce measures aimed at reducing the cumulative demand 3. Therefore, the major segments targeted include reduction of expenditure accrued in the public sector, increasing taxes and interests rates on loans. Usually, short-term stabilisation measures combine monetary, fiscal reforms and devaluation of currency, which deflates the actual exchange rate. These measures influence the value of commodities traded in the international market in relation to those produced and consumed in the local market 3. 3 P. Agenor, P. ââ¬Å"Macroeconomic Adjustment and the Poor: Analytical Issues and Crosscountry Evidence ââ¬Å"(2002). www.worldbank.org accessed 14 January 2012. 4 Ibid., p 33 Measures for ensuring short-term economic stabilisation include credit restrictions or ceilings, adjustment of exchange rate, minimising expenditures in the public sector, high tax policies and reforming the pricing of commodities3. Greenaway and Morrissey argued that the short-term nature of the stabilisation measures makes such policies to rely heavily on the managing and controlling the demand of the targeted economy. Eventually, the economy adopts a tendency of monetary absorption in the

Reflection papers#4 - Essay Example The punishment to fire that huge amount of people involved in corruption or those likely to be involved is acceptable. Even though the number of people sacked due to the corruption charges was extremely large, it is wise to eliminate them than try to change them (Watson, 2015). This is because; corruption does a lot of damage to the company than any other misconduct. First of all, corruption taints the image and reputation of a company and in fact for such an international company this is shameful and irreparable. Secondly, corruption threatens the very future of a company since money is used for personal things while the companyââ¬â¢s needs are neglected. This leads to bad work environment, reduction of employeeââ¬â¢s salaries and more. Thirdly, corruption leads to low quality standards of goods produced by a company which is corrupt. This is because they will take bribes and offer contracts to undeserving people furthermore, the work ethics will be poor since the workforce wi ll be full of incompetent people who bribed their way in to the company. Lastly, corruption will means that employees suffer at the hands of their fellow co workers and people with power since any charges will just be bribed and brushed off without fair and just consideration. This will also make many people be fired unjustly if the bosses feel like it. If I were the new chief ethics officer I would have handled the situation nearly the same way. However, I would have not fired everybody who was alleged to be in the corruption game. I would have used tact to find out the real ring leaders and not blame everybody in the departments. Even though bribery was legal in German until 1999, the corruption at Siemens was not justified (Watson, 2015). A leading international company like Siemens had a reputation to keep even when the vice was legal. A company can sign code and conduct contracts with employees upon employment where they are asked if
The Intel Corporation Essay Example for Free
The Intel Corporation Essay Introduction The main purpose of this case analysis is to find the issue and problem that Intel Corporation faced and how they improve their performance and solve problems. First, I will summarize the history of Intel Corporation. Second, to point out the challenge that Intel Corporation has. And, third, I will use SWOT analysis to analyze the internal strengths and weakness and external opportunities and threats of Intel Corporation. Eventually, I will give some recommendation. History of Intel Corporation Intel Corporation is a leading microprocessor producer for personal computer (PC) in the world. Intel Corporation was formed by In 1968, Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore founded Intel Corporation. After Intel Corporation founded, they recruited several employees from Fairchild Semiconductor to help them. Intel Corporation was mostly influenced by Andy Grove. He was an autocratic leader and gave everyone lots of pressure. Under his rules and management style, Intel Corporation set a good culture result in the future success. Since the dawn of the Intel Corporation, it has gained the leading position in semiconductor industry such as memory chip and microprocessor. Intel invested heavily in their RD department in order to strengthen their innovative leading position to against competitors. However, in recently years, the personal computer industry appears the negative growth rate which may harm for Intel business due to the majority business comes from personal computer. Therefore, Intel Corporation should take a consideration of downward sign to seek opportunity to exploit the blue ocean market. SWOT analysis of Intel Strength 1. Product Diversification Intel has variety products such as processors, motherboards, servers, cable modems, and solid state drive. Although Intel has dominated the market, it still put a lot of efforts on their product innovation. Diversification of Products integrated not only provides customers one-stop purchasing but also attract different field customers. 2. Technology Innovative and Strong RD Competence Intel fully understands RD is the key to allow them to lead in high tech industry. Moreover, the customers will never feel satisfaction with buying the same or few types of microprocessors. In order to satisfy various demands, Intel always spend huge amount and put a lot of efforts into their RD department which makes Intel is able to introduce new products before its competitors. Consequently, Intel can provide the choices to the demand from high-end product with high price and the low-end demand with lower price. 3. Economic of Scale Intel has almost dominated the PC, laptop, and corporate computerââ¬â¢s CPU which allows Intel to build up highly barriers for the new entrants because of the large economies of scale. Once Intel reaches the economies scale, they have a significant cost advantage over its competitors and that this dominant ability will make its competitors are essentially price takers, with little power to set up their own prices. Weakness 1. The Struggle of Expanding Smartphone Business Many experts claim that the smart phone will be flagship product in high tech industry for next decades. However, currently, ARM (The Architecture for the Digital World) dominates the smart phone chip market and acknowledges the first mover advantaged. As a result, it is very difficult to expand smart phone chip business for Intel and lose its competitive advantage. 2. Downward Microprocessor Demand As I mentioned before, smart phone may take some market away from PC and laptop. Currently, the demand of PC and laptopââ¬â¢s CPU is decline but Intel cannot take any advantages on smart phone chip. Moreover, the majority of Intelââ¬â¢s business comes from Microprocessor which is very risky for Intel. As long as the demand drops dramatically, it will greatly harm for Intel. Opportunities 1. Keep Innovative Competitive Advantage Technology Innovation is a key to success in rapid changing and highly competitive high tech industry. Keeps it pioneering introduction new product will develop the entry barriers and gain the competitive advantages. 2. Product Improvement Recently, Intel has launched it smart phone processor chip to compete with ARM face to face. Although, their chip works better than ARM, their chip cost more power than ARM. Therefore, it is a very good opportunity to grasp market share that if Intel improve their product based on their strong RD. Threats 1. Globally Downward of Consumer Purchasing Power Economic crisis will trigger the downward pressure on consumer purchasing ability. Laptop and personal computer is consumer product when the decreased personal income will affect the demand. Consequently, the decreased of the demand will lead to negative impact on Intelââ¬â¢s sales and profits. 2. The Fighting Campaign from Competitor Although Intel has become the biggest company, they still need to pay attention on their competitor-AMD. The decisions made by Intel are highly dependent upon the action of their rivals. Intel needs to closely put their eye on AMD to avoid any technology fall behind to keep their leading innovation. Recommendation Intel should strengthen their PC and sever business by using technical leadership because the PC segment still estimates to have a growing market approximately 17% worldwide. Intel can launch more marketing campaigns and put more efforts on developing new technology to exploit more business. Intel can expand products into new device. The computing landscape is changing such as smart phone, smart phones, and tablets are connecting to the internet and become more intelligent. Intel should be more aggressive to pursue opportunities to expand their business in new device categories.

American Disability Policy for Education
American Disability Policy for Education IDEA, 504, and ADA ADA The American Disabilities Act (ADA), the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (504) are legislation put into place by the United States Federal Government in an attempt to improve the living and educational lives of those with disabilities. All three serve a distinct purpose but also have several aspects that overlap. Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1975 was passed by congress helped changed public education for children with disabilities. It made it possible that all children could receive a free appropriate public education. This law was far more progressive than those of the past. It stated that special education was to be provided in the least limiting setting. This means that students are to be educated in the best way possible in a regular classroom. (Mastropieri Scruggs, 2014, p. 3) Before the passing of IDEA disabled student were either put into institutions or their parents had to put them into private schools which did not have the capabilities to educate them correctly. After its initiation students with disabilities now received free, suitable education. (Mastropieri Scruggs, 2014, p. 3) 504 Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a civil rights law that was put into place to prevent any discrimination against any individuals with disabilities by any agency that receives financial support from the federal government and offers a free, appropriate public education (FAPE). Even though some private schools may be exempt from the law, both public schools and the workforce are not. There may be students that do not fall under the IDEA legislation but they could receive services under 504. Issues such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and asthma are under the 504 mandate. To qualify these issues limit major live activity. (Mastropieri Scruggs, 2014, p. 11) ADA The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 requires that individuals with a disability must be provide reasonable accommodations. The accommodation are for the workplace and commercial facilities. The protection extends to those who attend colleges and universities. ADA protects those with physical or mental disabilities. The accommodations for the colleges and universities are similar to those of the K-12 public school system. The most influence this law has had is in the workplace. It has provided employment to millions of Americans who would not have employment without the law. (Mastropieri Scruggs, 2014, p. 13) Similarities The similarities between IDEA, 504, and ADA are that they all protect those who have some sort of disability. The disabilities may be emotional, physical and/or mental. All three require that reasonable accommodations be provided to those who need them. 504 and IDEA have more similarities. For example, they both require FAPE for students with special needs. Both legislation also has procedural safeguards in place to help support the needs of the individuals. Written notices are required for both. Differences The big difference between the three is how they are funded. ADA is funded by grants. The grants help provide technical assistance to both private and public agencies. IDEA is supported by federal funds to help states and local education institutions to serve the needs of infants, toddlers and youth that have disabilities. For the 504 the responsibility falls onto the state and local agencies. Funds from IDEA cannot be used to support those who have a 504. The evaluation and placement procedures for all three are also different. IDEA requires a very detail evaluation. The 504 requires only a notice for evaluation. While the ADA requires no evaluation. All three legislation are important safeguards for those who are disabled. It allows for FAPE for students with disabilities and appropriate work environments for adults. It has allowed for those who in the past could not receive such support to receive what they need. Which allows for success and a richer life. References Mastropieri, M. A., Scruggs, T. E. (2014). Phenomenological Description and Interpretation All five of the archetypal shapes are in my self-portrait. First of all, the outside appearance is that of a square of rectangle. I feel that people who do not know me do not perceive any of the characteristics that the other shapes represent. Stability is the only characteristic represented by the shapes that people perceive of me. Inside my stable world is a circle in the middle of the bottom of the box. Within the circle is a triangle. This represents how spirituality is the center of my inner self and I find balance within my spirituality. Coming up from the center of the box is a spiral. As the spiral reaches its apex, there is an equidistant cross. This represents how I am constantly growing in order to reach a critical decision-making time of my life (what I want to do for the rest of my life). All of the Yoruba chromatics have been used in portraying my personality. But the most abundant type by far is dudu. The majority of the inside of my box are colors of brown, black, and gray. These colors show how I am very practical and down to earth. People who do not know me see me as down to earth and this does not change even when one gets to know me. The person at the bottom of the box has all three types on him. This represents how at some point in time my close friends see all the personality traits (aloof, passionate, and practical). The inside of the circle at the bottom of the box is colored orange. This shows how I am more passionate when it comes to my spirituality. The inside of the triangle is colored shades of red and blue. This shows how I am passionate, yet cool since I have found a balance. à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à Sexton 2 The color contrast of my self-portrait is very weak. There are no strong contrasts between light and dark. I am not dramatic or intense by any means. The weak contrast in colors illustrates how I have a subtle personality. The lack of pastel colors shows that I do not have a delicate personality. The line directions in my self-portrait are all horizontal and vertical. The majority of the direction is horizontal, which shows how my personality is very passive. The vertical lines show that I have a stable personality as well as the potential to be dynamic.

Managing COnflicts :: essays research papers
Scenario: Agency Issues in Negotiations Al and Bob entered the third meeting with some confidence. As the representatives for Symbiot Services (SS), they had hammered out some detailed language with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) that would meet all of the prior objections raised during negotiations by the agency, and would still assure SS a reasonable profit for the services that SS would provide. Al had been the primary negotiator for SS. Bob was now entering the negotiations to provide the final legal fine points to the agreement in principle, and to thereafter give the legal departmentà ¡Ã ¦s blessing to the agreement. On the other side of the table, Rhonda and Sarah unpacked their notes meticulously. Rhonda, DNRà ¡Ã ¦s primary negotiator, had worked with Al to identify all the issues raised by the respective organizations and craft an agreement that weaved together all the parts into an effective agreement. Sarah had joined Rhonda for this meeting to sign off for the States Attorney Office, putting the legal seal of approval on what had been written. While Sarah and Bob unloaded their papers and books, Al and Rhonda chatted about how difficult it had been to identify all the issues raised at their respective home offices, then figure out how things could be addressed in a way agreeable to both sides, and then reduce the entire wall of post-it notes, taped copies of e-mails, and highlighted letters to a readable document. Because they are the talking links between their organizations, Al and Rhonda had to almost personally bridge the gaps between the organizations, and often it seemed they were a team of their own, arguing with the two à ¡Ã §home teams.à ¡Ã ¨ The last sticking point had been the issue of how much SS would discount its regular charges for services. DNR was a very big customer and expected to get the bulk discount for services. The DNR had wanted a 50% reduction from the regular rate; SS had offered 10%, and they had finally settled on a 25% rate reduction for this contract, in the interest of providing a break to taxpayers. Both Al and Rhonda were careful to obtain e-mailed or hard copy approval of the 25% rate reduction from their bosses, because neither had the authority to set unique rates unilaterally. Sarah, representing DNR, brought the meeting to focus by reciting the issues that had been resolved, and asked SS if it had any final issues to resolve before declaring the final document completed.

Heart Healthy Information Security Policy Essay
Due to personnel, policy and system changes, and audits, Heart Healthy has voluntarily updated their information security policy to be in-line with the current information security laws and regulations. Currently Heart-Healthy Insurance, a large insurance company, plans to review and provide recommendations for an updated information security policy in the area ââ¬Ës of: 1. Current New Users Policy ââ¬â The current new user section of the policy states: ââ¬Å"New users are assigned access based on the content of an access request. The submitter must sign the request and indicate which systems the new user will need access to and what level of access will be needed. A managerââ¬â¢s approval is required to grant administrator access.â⬠(Heart-Healthy Insurance Information Security Policy) 2. Current Password Requirements ââ¬â The current password requirements section of the policy states: ââ¬Å"Passwords must be at least eight characters long and contain a combination of upper- and lowercase letters. Shared passwords are not permitted on any system that contains patient information. When resetting a password, users cannot reuse any of the previous six passwords that were used. Users entering an incorrect password more than three times will be locked out for at least 15 minutes before the password can be reset.â⬠(Heart-Healthy Insurance Information Security Policy) Heart Healthy Insurance Information Security Policy and Update Proposed User Access Policy The purpose of the User Access Policy is to provide access to Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s network infrastructure and to ensure appropriate access to all of Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s information resources. The purpose of Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Network Access Policyâ⬠is to establish the appropriate level of user access to Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s network infrastructure. Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s network access rules are necessary in order to preserve the confidentiality, Integrity and availability of Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s proprietary information. Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s Information Security Office will be responsible for management and administration of Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s information security function(s). Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s Information Security Office will be the chief point of contact for any and all security related functions. User Access Policy * Heart-Healthy users will be permitted access based on the principle of least privilegesââ¬â¢ * Remote access or dial-in-services will be requested by Manager level positions and up, and approved by the Information Security Department. * End users are not allowed to re-transmit or extend any of Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s network services. E.g. users will not attach hubs, switches, firewalls, access points to Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s network without prior written authorization. * Users are not allowed to install any additional hardware or software without the express written consent from the Heart-Healthy information technology department. * All Heart-Healthy computer systems will conform to agency standards * End users are not allowed to download, install or run any programs that could potentially reveal or undermine Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s in-place security system, e.g. packet sniffers, password crackers or network mapping tools are strictly forbidden. All Heart-Healthy employees, 3rd party contractors are responsible for managing their information resources and will be held accountable for any information security violations or infractions Current Password Policies and Requirements ââ¬Å"Passwords must be at least eight characters long and contain a combination of upper- and lowercase letters. Shared passwords are not permitted on any system that contains patient information. When resetting a password, users cannot reuse any of the previous six passwords that were used. Users entering an incorrect password more than three times will be locked out for at least 15 minutes before the password can be resetâ⬠(Heart-Healthy Insurance Group Information Security Policy). NIST Special Publication 800-63 The stronger the password, the more likely that password guessing and cracking will be deterred. The combination of the password and the complexity directly lead to its unpredictability. With 8 character complex passwords, with current GPU processing power a password can be broken in less than 26 days by exhausting all possible combinations. Proposed Password Guidelines * Passwords should be a minimum of 14 characters * Passwords based on dictionary words are prohibited * Passwords based on pet names, biographical information, childrenââ¬â¢s names, no names of relatives * Passwords must consist of a mixture of uppercase, lowercase, and a special character * System will remember last 12 passwords * If passwords are written down, they must be kept in a safe place, e.g. a wallet, or a safe. Passwords are not be be written down and tape to the bottom of the keyboard, stuck to the computer monitor with a sticky note, or put in an unlocked desk drawer. * All passwords will be changed every 90 days Proposed Password Policy Heart-Healthy password policy guideline is a recommendation for creating a new user password. This policy is a guideline to help end users in: * Choosing and creating a strong password * Ensure that passwords are highly resistant to brute force attacks and password guessing * Recommendations on how users should handle and store their passwords safely * Recommendations on lost or stolen passwords Password expiration * Password expiration will serve 2 specific purposes: * Password expiration will limit the time crackers have to either guess, or brute force a password. * If a password has been compromised, the password expiration will help to limit the time the cracker / hacker has access to Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s internal networking system. Heart-Healthy has embarked on a path to bring their information security posture regarding ââ¬Å"Password Requirementsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"New Usersâ⬠up-to-date. Heart-Healthy has used NIST (National Institute of Standards) and HIPAA ( Health Insurance Portability and Accounting Act) regulations in order to achieve their goal of providing the CIA (Confidentiality, Integrity, Authorization) triad for information security. The federal government has implemented a number of laws and regulations that pertain to the handling, reviewing and compliance assurance of private or confidential data. With respect to NIST, and HIPAA; although they do not specifically outline the methods in these documents, Heart-Healthy is obligated to make an attempt to implement reasonable standards in order to meet the current legal obligations outlined by these laws and regulations. Heart-Healthy will focus on three main categories for their security posture: Physical, Technical, Administrative, * Physical Security ââ¬â Heart-Healthy has designed their physical security around protecting computer systems that store confidential data. * Technical Security ââ¬â Heart-Healthy has implemented software and security safeguards designed specifically to ensure access is controlled, and the integrity and the authentication of the stored data remains intact. * Administrative Security ââ¬â Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s administrative security ensures that Heart-Healthy procedures, standards, security measures, and organizational policies are implemented by qualified personnel. The HIPAA Security Rule The HIPAA Security Rule establishes national standards to protect individualsââ¬â¢ electronic personal health information (ePHI) that is created, received, used, or maintained by a covered entity. The Security Rule requires appropriate administrative, physical and technical safeguards to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and security of electronic protected health information (HSS.gov ). NIST ensures that the CIA (Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability) of any electronic personal health information (EPHI) information that is maintained, received or transmitted is protected from potential threats and hazards that could potentially affect the integrity of the ePHI information. NIST also provides protection against the accidental or intentional exposure of private information. Heart-Healthy understands that information security means protecting their information from unauthorized disclosure, access and any disruptions. Heart-Healthy understands the difference in protecting their sensitive data lies primarily in their approach. Heart-Healthy has taken precautions to prevent accidental or intentional exposure to electronic private health information. Heart-Healthy feels confident that these policies put forth will help eliminate unauthorized access to Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s information systems. Heart-Healthyââ¬â¢s technical security policies will help ensure that end users are responsible for their information. Technical policies will also serve to protect end users from accidental exposure by providing adequate protection to end users passwords and confidential data. Heart-Healthy will provide annual training on their new policies, in order to ensure end users are aware of security risks and that end users will ultimately be accountable for their personal security awareness. Heart-Healthy personnel will ultimately be responsible for the management of their information resources and will be held accountable for their actions in relation to their information security. All access to Heart-Healthy information resources are for authorized business purposes only. Heart-Healthy will not provide access to or guarantee access to email, web browsing. Heart-Healthy will monitor all electronic communications that might be needed in order to fulfill a complaint or any investigatory requirements. Heart-Healthy understands that if any confidential information is breached or falls into the hands of a competitor or a hacker that the consequences could be devastating. References mailchip.com. Poem Comparison â⬠Telephone Conversation Essay
The context of this poem is of a black man from Africa trying to find accommodation, it is based on his experiences as a student in the 1960ââ¬â¢s. The poem is written from the perspective as a phone discussion between him and a landlady. The main problem in this poem is that there is a huge amount of racism show by the landlady to the African ââ¬â ââ¬ËHow dark? Are you light or very dark?ââ¬â¢ This shows immediately that the landlady has something against coloured people and canââ¬â¢t have a conversation without knowing the skin colour of the man. It also seems that the landlady would prefer the man not be coloured than to rather receive money for the accommodation. The impression we get from the landlady tells us that she is a very racist and ignorant woman. She first shows this after the man mentions heââ¬â¢s an Africa, which she doesnââ¬â¢t reply to ââ¬â ââ¬ËSilence, silenced transmission of pressurised good breeding.ââ¬â¢ The silence shows us her simple summary of her response of having to think twice about accommodating the black man. She shows that she has a sense of racism in her ââ¬â ââ¬ËConsiderate she was, varying the emphasis ââ¬â Are you dark? Or very light?ââ¬â¢ This tells us that the landlady is trying to imagine all the colours he could be and shows she judges people totally on colour. We also see that she is wealthy and cares about her image a lot ââ¬â ââ¬ËLipstick coated, long gold ââ¬â rolled cigarette holder piped.ââ¬â¢ From the view of the man he would think she is also a snob due to the way she is speaking to him and her questions. When the conversation starts it begins normally but is changed completely when the man says he is African ââ¬â ââ¬ËSelf confession ââ¬â I am African.ââ¬â¢ This suggests that the mans skin colour is a sin which he is guilty of. He also feels that he needs to defend himself even before the woman has started to ask any questions. Then after the landlady asked him how dark he was he didnââ¬â¢t know how to respond to her ââ¬â ââ¬ËButton A, Button B,ââ¬â¢ this shows us that the man is shocked and confused to answer the question just asked. After the man realises that the landlady has a sense of racism in her, he begins to become angry and compares it to the environment he is in ââ¬â ââ¬ËRed booth, red pillar box, red double tiered.ââ¬â¢ The red that he is describing represents his feelings which means he is angry and the environment seems repulsive to him. When the man says ââ¬â ââ¬ËLike plain or milk chocolateââ¬â¢ he is talking about his skin colour and at the same time making a clever joke out of it. He is also mocking the landlady and showing her that he is not going to put up with the racist questions anymore. This shows that he is beginning to twist the conversation and is now the person who is asking the questions. He shows this when he says his colour is ââ¬ËWest African Sepiaââ¬â¢ and then asking her if she knew his skin colour. But as ââ¬ËWest African Sepiaââ¬â¢ isnââ¬â¢t a colour it tells us that the man is using his knowledge to make a fool of her. This makes him feel better due to the fact that he is now criticising her. Also, he feels he wants to make her feel the same way he felt when he had to answer the racist questions. The attitude of the man changes at the end of the poem from being a polite and respectful to an angry and rude man. But he changes his attitude because of the landladyââ¬â¢s judgement of him and decided to show his angry and rage to show that he is not a weak person. The man is now making fun of her and is mocking her at more length when he speaks about his colour ââ¬â ââ¬ËDonââ¬â¢t you know what it is? Thatââ¬â¢s dark, isnââ¬â¢t it?ââ¬â¢ He then starts to be rude by offering to show his bottom under the pretence of suggesting she meets him before judging ââ¬â ââ¬ËMy bottom raven black, wouldnââ¬â¢t you rather see for yourself.ââ¬â¢ He does this to make her feel uncomfortable as he was before and tried to put her in a complicated position. The control of power in the beginning of this poem was in the hands of the landlady as she owns the house and is offering the accommodation to the man. As the poem continues her power begins to decrease as the man reverses the situation as he starts to mock her. By the end of the poem the man has gained all the power from the landlady and is so powerful the landlady talks but only when she is asked a question. I think the poet wrote this to show that people who seem to be weak like the African man could be clever enough to gain power. Also, people who are foreign to a country still believe they have rights to fight back to unpleasant comments. You Will Be Hearing From Us Shortly The context of this poem is based on an interview for a position at a company. The interview includes the ââ¬Ëinterviewerââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëintervieweesââ¬â¢. The poem is written from the perspective of the interviewer asking questions to the candidates. The main problem in this situation is that there is a sense of prejudice shown by the interviewer to the candidates. Also, the candidates are not being treated fair to even be considered the position at the company. Another problem is that in the poem people are judged on looks and appearance instead of their knowledge and potential. The impression we get from the interviewer is that she wants the interviewee to know that she is in charge and is the only person asking the questions. This is shown in the first stanza when she immediately asks her questions, which shows she has a much more superior attitude than the interviewees ââ¬â ââ¬ËYou feel adequate to the demands of this positionââ¬â¢. This shows from the start-off that the interviewer is in control and doesnââ¬â¢t show any manners to wait for a response but instead asks the next question. The character of the interviewer develops into being rude and also she doesnââ¬â¢t pay attention to the intervieweeââ¬â¢s emotions or feelings. She shows that she is rude when she questions their looks and abilities ââ¬â ââ¬ËFind your appearance, disturbing?ââ¬â¢ She also is more direct in asking questions and doesnââ¬â¢t hesitate of their reaction this is show hen she questions their accent ââ¬â ââ¬ËAnd your accent that is the way you have always spoken, is it?ââ¬â¢ This gives us the impression that she is insulting the speech of the interviewee. The poet makes us think that the candidate is really weak and doesnââ¬â¢t show any sign of defending herself. Also, whenever the interviewer finishes asking a question she also replies for the candidates ââ¬â ââ¬ËSo glad we agree, Quite so.ââ¬â¢ This shows that they are so powerless they canââ¬â¢t be able to answer for themselves. It also shows us that the interviewees seem that they donââ¬â¢t care about receiving criticism and do not have the power to stand up and respond. The character of the candidate develops into being more weaker than she is already. She receives more and more criticism from the interviewer and never has the chance to respond due to the interviewers power ââ¬â ââ¬ËWhat of your education? Where were you educated?ââ¬â¢ This shows the interviewer is now not even giving the courtesy of a response and instead goes straight onto the next question, showing the intervieweeââ¬â¢s lack of importance to her. The control of power in this poem was in the hands of the interviewer in the beginning. As the poem continues her power gets stronger and stronger and becomes so strong that at a point youââ¬â¢d forget that the candidates are even present. By the end of the poem the interviewer still has all the power possible in the interview and uses it to great effect against the interviewees. I think the poets reasons for writing this poem is to show people that a person who is in a powerful enough position to make judgements of people can have even more power by showing it and using it to their advantage.

Sustainable Electrical Construction Research Paper
Sustainable Electrical Construction - Research Paper Example e industrial process whereby the various processes that go on in manufacturing and production will be treated with a sense of urgency for the conservation of the environment (ZinCo Worldwide, 2011). Detailed reason why this is so will be discussed later but it would be noticed that the rate of industrialization has left us all with very few options other than manufacturing as many of the goods and products we need as possible. In the present paper, the electrical construction industry shall be used as a case study whereby a critical analysis of the industrial process that takes place during electrical construction shall be undertaken to understand the options of sustainability available for industry players and how best they have played their roles in ensuring that these roles are well played. Why Industrial Process is a focus for Sustainability The United States and other countries commonly referred to as the power houses of industrialization continue to depend on massive industrial development for the running of their economies. Interestingly, it is when some of these powerhouses survive in their economic dealings that the global economic climate becomes stable and sound (Diadem USA, Inc., 2011). But as much as it is important to embrace industrialization, it is equally important to understand the risks and challenges that industrialization carries so that when these challenges and risks are known, the needed risk management interventions would be developed towards them. Indeed, industrialization is highly associated with industrial processes whereby manufacturing and production takes the larger part of industries. Meanwhile, the means or source of energy in powering most of these industries in the industrial processes demand the use of energy sources that have long been known to be very threatening to the environment (Ludwick, 2011). Apart from the source of energy, the waste produced in the course of industrial processes such as smoke has also been identifi ed to be highly harmful to the environment. Even more, the byproducts of most of the industrial processes have been suspected to be ill-treated and wrongfully disposed (Intelligent Design Group, 2011). Usability among end users also accounts for some instances of industrial processââ¬â¢ risk against the environment. This is because most end users have very limited knowledge on the best ways to handle the products they buy such that the products will not end up becoming a threat to the environment. It is against the backdrops listed above that it has become so necessary that industrial process becomes a focus for sustainability in the current research paper. Electrical Construction and the Environment Electrical construction is mainly concerned with the production of electricity and electricity products (Glavinich, 2007). This is often than by electricity construction companies. Lately, oil and gas companies have also been highly involved in this process. Depending on the locality and resources available to an electrical construc
